If one upgraded the door in the future, could other hardware (e.g. backset or door thickness plate) be upgraded as well?

Yes, you can order latches and thick door kit separately. The manufacturer has a location in Washington State and assuming that the items ordered are in stock, most of California is has a three day transit time and the manufacturer ships in about two to three day after receiving the order.
