A LIGHT sanding would be good for all unfinished products before staining, nothing to aggressive you are just removing the dirt and oils from shipping and handling of the product. You do not want to use anything too fine because the sawdust will clog the pores of the wood. This is especially true for open grain woods like oak. A 150 to 180 grit sand paper is ideal, again just a light sanding. Tack cloth or compressed air to get rid of the dust and you should be set to stain.
