The little nib on the bottom of the 2" knob is to help prevent the knob from spinning by creating an indent in the wood.
For your other question, sounds like you need a longer screw. Measure the total material thickness of the object that you are trying to attach the knob or pull to and add a solid 1/4". We sell an array of lengths from 3/4" to 2" long the thread that you will need is 8-32. Your local hardware store should have these as well, make sure that the thread is 8-32. There are two types of threads that are commonly used for knobs and pulls 8-32 and M4, this company uses the 8-32 thread.
