It's a square shaft that is 3-1/4" long. The 4 sides are 1/4" each in width. The shaft is threaded on both sides but not in the middle where the latchbolt goes. The threading allows for adjustment in the thickness of your door. It will adjust from 7/8" to 1-3/8.
