It is always better to install Expo Design "The Shelf Clip" shelf brackets properly on wall studs, especially if the shelf is intended for heavy loads. However, if you choose not to, you would need a drywall anchor, but it is not recommended by the manufacturer. Yes, you can use wooden shelves as long as they are 3/8" - 1/2" thick.
