How to mount folding grab bars on 16 inch stud centers?

If wall studs are 16 inches apart, how can you install a 12 inch bar into the studs on both sides of the bar?

To ensure a secure installation of the Extend-A-Hand 12" Folding Grab Bar, attach a blocking piece, such as a 2x4, to the studs. Then, securely mount the folding grab handle to this blocking. The blocking piece MUST be affixed to the studs for optimal stability.
