What exactly is an ANSI Grade?

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a private nonprofit that administers voluntary performance standards for builder’s hardware. The purpose of ANSI grades is to help identify the quality and durability of locksets through a series of operational and security tests. ANSI grades reflect 3 levels of security and durability:

  • Grade 1 certification: Highest Grade Security. The strongest grade ANSI recognizes for any residential or commercial product.

  • Grade 2 certification: - Higher Residential Security. Designed to offer excellent security and durability. Used mostly for residential applications and some light commercial applications.

  • Grade 3 certification: Basic Residential Security. The lowest grade provided by ANSI, and the minimal acceptable quality for residential door locks.

Types of Commercial Hardware

  • Door Closers: A door closer is a mechanical device that is used primarily in applications in commercial buildings to automatically close a door after it has been opened. Used in both exterior and interior applications, door closers are available in a range of mounting styles some of most common being regular arm, surface mounted, parallel arm surface mounted, and top jamb mounted. The amount of traffic and use that the door is subject to will also determine if the application requires a light, medium or heavy-duty door closer.

  • Exit Devices & Panic Door Hardware: Panic hardware and fire exit hardware is designed to provide fast and easy egress for a building's occupants in case of an emergency. Because of its durability and ease of use, panic hardware is also commonly installed in places not required by code. Depending on the application, desired aesthetics and door design, there are various types of panic bars available including touchpad style push bars, rim panic devices, mortise panic devices, and vertical rod devices.

  • Electric Strikes: Electric strikes are designed for use in commercial applications with heavy traffic that require secure access control. An electric strike is an electromechanical door locking device designed to work in conjunction with cylindrical locksets, mortise lockets, or rim exit devices. Electric strike plates are partially controlled by internal electronic mechanisms that releases the lock. When the electric strike is activated, it releases to allow the door to be opened without using the mechanical lock or turning the door handle. After the door is opened it returns to the standard position and re-locks once the door is closed.

  • Door Thresholds & Weatherstrip: Weatherization product that seals buildings against air, dust, water and sound. Various products include door bottoms, door gasketing, door astragals, smokeseal, door shoes and door bottom sweeps.
